Memorial Wkend :)

Amidst all of the chaos that was last weekend, I had 2 orders lined up...

first up... a Softball themed birthday cake...

This cake was super cute and was the first time I...

  1. used printed paper to cover/decorate my cake board
  2. used ribbon to add a special touch to the edge of my cake board
  3. used my Cricut Cake machine (YAY!!!) to make the letters and #14
After all of the reviews I've read on the CC machine, I thought it was going to be a nightmare to use but... it wasn't bad at all.  Everything went pretty smoothly AND I think they looked GREAT on the cake :)

The cake was topped with pink "shooting stars", a pink cap, glove & ball, and a bat :)
It was a Dominican cake with dulce de leche filling... YUMMY!!!

===============================

the Second order was for a Neutral Jungle themed baby shower cake and cuppies...

This cake was super YUMMY!!!
Top tier: Red Velvet with cream cheese icing
Bottom:  Dominican with dulce de leche

Here's a close-up of the adorable lion and monkey...

The client had mentioned that they would like a palm tree incorporated in the design.  I was a little nervous at first (since I had never made one before) but... I think it came out pretty good...

The cake was accompanied by 4DZ cuppies... chocolate and Dominican with vanilla and chocolate buttercream topped with plastic zebras, giraffes, lions, elephants, and mini palm trees...

I rec'd GREAT feedback on everything... YAY!!!
can't wait to get started on my next order :)

Day 3...

I'm happy to report that I was VERY productive last night :)
I was able to finish (yes... that's right... finish) ALL of the Sesame Street cuppie toppers (3 DZ total) and to start working on the "Ni Hao, Kai-Lan" cuppie toppers.

Here's a peak at the Sesame Street crew (LOL)...

Cookie Monster
Elmo
Big Bird
After finishing that, you would think I would want to clean-up shop and head to bed but instead... I was WIDE awake (LOL).  I decided to strike while the iron was hot and keep working.  I started working on the cuppie toppers for the "Ni Hao, Kai-Lan" order.  and I'm glad I did b/c now I just have to make 6 more to complete the set.

Say hello to Mr. Sun and Ho Ho...

I don't even want to tell you what time I went to bed last night.  It was really really late but... totally worth it.  I can't wait to mount these babies on my yummy cuppies...

So... Both orders are due tmw morning.  I hope to be quick and very productive tonight so I can hit the hay at a reasonable time.

My Day 4 To-Do List...

  • bake 4DZ cuppies
  • make buttercream to frost cuppies and cakes
  • Prep/Stack/Design cake
  • finish Kai-Lan cuppie toppers
  • decorate the cuppies

Let's see what happens... I'll keep you all posted :)

Day 2...

As I mentioned yesterday, my GOAL for last night was to start making flowers for the "Ni Hao Kai Lan" cake and to try to start working on the cuppie toppers.  But... I wasn't able to do any of that.  Just as I was about to start, I noticed that I made a boo-boo.  One of the cakes I baked for this order was the wrong size :(

This is what happens when you bake after-hours and you're tired... you tend to make mistakes (or at least I do...LOL).  So... instead of getting started on my fondant/gumpaste work, I had to bake.  I was upset at first but then I was fine.  Just look at the bright side... now I have a yummy chocolate cake for me to enjoy (LOL).

So... After preparing my batter and popping the cakes in the oven, I got side tracked (that tends to happen to me A LOT).  As I mentioned yesterday, I wasn't 100% happy with the way "Kai Lan" turned out.  So... instead of moving on to other MUCH needed things, I went back to give her a "make-over" (LOL).

BEFORE

Don't get me wrong... she looked really cute but... I think she was too compact (borderline "pudgy").  So... I made minor adjustments.

AFTER

They look very similar but... Overall, I think the mini "make-over" suits hers very well (LOL).

After last night's setback, I hope to be able to get back on track tonight.  My GOAL... make flowers and cuppie toppers for this cake and start prepping for another order I have due on the same day.

I have a feeling it's going to be yet another LONG night (LOL).  I'll post pics tmw :)

"Ni Hao Kia Lan" [Day 1]

Last night I started prepping for the "Ni Hao Kia Lan" cake and cuppie order I have due this weekend.
It's for a 3 year old's Birthday party :)

GOAL:  to start (and hopefully complete) the cake topper

Here's the picture I used as my guide... Isn't she cute?!?  LOL :)

and here she is...

This was my very first attempt at making this character and since I happen to be a bit anal, I feel like she still needs a little bit of work.  When I get home tonight I might end up making minor adjustments here and there.  I'll keep you posted :)

Other than that, my GOAL for tonight is... to start making flowers for the cake and if I have time after that, I'll start working on the cuppie toppers.

Please check back tomorrow for Day 2 pics :)

Happy Mother's Day!!!

This Mother's Day I was a busy bee in the kitchen :)

My cousin hired me to bake a cake for her Mom.
She requested a Mother hen with her 4 chicks and an egg (representing her grandson).

I thought it was a great design concept because of the meaning behind it...
her mother calls her and her 3 brothers her "pollitos" (translation... "little chicks").
Too cute!!!

Here's the final product...

The cake was Dominican with Dulce de Leche filling... YUMMY!!!
I hope they enjoyed it :)

..................................................................................................

The next cake was made for the BEST Mom EVER!!!  My Mom :)

She's not only my Mom but my BEST friend.  She's always there for me and I hope she knows that I will ALWAYS be there for her too.

Being a (new) Mom myself, I've come to realize how AMAZING a mother's love is... it's given me a new found respect for my Mom.  She's the total package and we are so lucky to have been blessed with you... I LOVE you Mom!!!

okay... back to the cake (as I'm fighting away tears... LOL).
A little gift from me to my mommy...

It was her favorite flavor...

I know she'll enjoy it :)

Meow...

I was hired by a friend (who's a repeat customer... yay!!!) to make a cat themed MINI cake for her co worker's bday.

When I asked what the theme should be, she quickly replied, "CATS... she LOVES them and I don't... it's an inside joke".  So... what better way to celebrate her birthday than with a YUMMY cake topped with an adorable cat :)

Here's a picture of the birthday girl's cat, "Bandit"...
I don't really like cats but... she's pretty darn cute :)

After receiving the picture, I immediately became inspired and this is what I came up with...

I figured I'd throw in a ball of yarn... I'm pretty sure that's a cat thing (LOL).
And here's the finished product...

A Dominican cake with Dulce de Leche filling and suspiro frosting... YUMMY!!!
Hope the birthday girl likes it :)
