Bright lights, Big city

I was hired last month by a co-worker to bake 2 dozen of my YUMMY Chocolate Guinness cuppies for a "joint" birthday party.  They were for her boyfriend and several of his friends who planned to celebrate their birthday's together.  She wanted to make sure that the theme was something that they would ALL like and since they all live and work in NYC, she figured that would be the best theme.

So...  I put my thinking cap on and got started :)
Check out the fondant toppers...
My absolute favorite were the pretzels...
they looked so real and YUMMY :)
I was so happy with the complete set...
They looked so good together...
I hope the birthday boys & girls (LOL) enjoyed their cuppies :)

Hello Kitty

This job turned out to be one of my favorite jobs to date.

My client's daughter LOVES Hello Kitty and I wanted to make sure I gave her something she would also LOVE.  I had soooo many ideas and wasn't sure which direction to go in... I just knew that I wanted something different.  Here are a couple of pictures from my 1st Hello Kitty job (November 2010)...

side note... It's been almost year since this job.
I can't believe how FAST time flies.  It feels like just yesterday.

So... I proposed several ideas to my client and she chose a 2D cake.
Which I was soooo happy about b/c I LOVE 2D cakes :)

I wanted to keep it simple and girly.
Here are some pics of the final product...

I LOVED the way this cake came out!!!

side note... for those of you who don't know, I am a stickler for details.
so... I really wanted to make sure Hello Kitty looked just like the image the client gave me.
Here's a comparison...

and the bow on the side of the cake was the perfect "girly" touch...

The cake was accompanied by 2 dozen YUMMY Red Velvet cuppies all decorated with fondant toppers...

My client was really happy with the cake & cuppies.
she even sent me a picture of the cake after it was cut into...

This has to be one of my favorite pictures EVER!!!
Thanks for sharing :)

Toy Story 2nd Birthday

My son is in LOVE with Toy Story and he doesn't discriminate... he LOVES parts 1, 2, and 3.  You might even say he eats, drinks, and sleeps Tee-dory (that's how he pronounces it... LOL).

Those movies are ALWAYS playing!!!  Whether it be in my room, his room, the living-room, my car... there's no escaping it.  So... when thinking of the perfect theme for his 2nd birthday, it was the 1st thing that popped into mind and I couldn't wait to start planning and prepping :)

His birthday is in August so the party was supposed to take place in our backyard BUT b/c of inclement weather (AKA "Hurricane Irene"), we had to move everything inside.
It took forever to arrange and rearrange the furniture but... in the end, I think we did a good job.
Take a look at the decor...
from left to right... a bundle of hay with red & yellow swirly lollipops, mini servings of popcorn, personalized bottles of water, cowboy boot mugs, and Blue & Red cowboy hats.

Here are some close-ups...

and for those of you who have seen Toy Story...
"there's a snake in my boot"...
We had a really cool craft station set-up for the kids complete with painting activities...

And last, but not least, the cake table...
I wanted it to look like a scence straight from "Andy's" room...
The birthday sign was AMAZING!!!
side note... It was made with TONS of love by my BF who also happens to be my son's God Mother.

and now back to the cake table...

side note (#2)... the "playing scene" cardboard images were made by my BBFF (LOL).
I had the vision but you made it a reality... thank you :)

and... you know that I HAD to throw in some YUMMY cuppies :)...
Overall, the party was a great success... My son had a BLAST!!!
It's been a month and he is still talking about it... It was definitley worth all the LONG hours spent prepping :)

Again... I'd like to send a special Thank You to my "ladies" (you know who you are).
I couldn't have done it without you... I love you guys :)
and ofcourse, to my Hubby... you're the BEST!!!

I can't wait to start planning his 3rd birthday party!!!
LOL... j/k :)

It's been a while...

For those of you who don't know, I was pretty much "closed" for the entire month of August.
It was a nice LONG break but... now it's back to business (LOL).

So... keep an eye-out for new posts :)

Ja-makin' a cake for the Birthday Boy...

Last weekend, I was hired by my coworker/friend to bake for her cousin's boyfriend's birthday.

*** Side note ***
This friend (AKA Misha) is the BOMB!!!
She's had my back since day one... always helping to promote & grown my caking business.
I just wanted to take the time out to say... Thank you!!!
I really, truly appreciate it :)

Okay... now back to the cake (LOL).  Misha's cousin wanted a cake that highlighted her boyfriend Oneale's talents and interests... she wanted it to be "a reflection of him"...
  • he's very creative/artsy... likes to draw, paint, take pictures, etc...
  • favorite color is purple
  • likes soccer
  • and he's Jamaican so she wanted that represented somehow
After our "consult", I was ready to go.
The creative wheels were turning (LOL).  I was super excited about this cake and couldn't wait to get started.

Here's my initial sketch...

She wanted the biggest cake (bottom tier) to be Funfetti so... an idea struck [Ding, Ding... that was the sound effect I heard in my head... LOL].  Why not make the colors in the cake green, yellow, and black (like the Jamaican flag)?!?!?  So... Here's a pic of the inside of the cake...

It looked GREAT!!!
I was super excited about that "personal" touch :)

Here are some pics of the final product...

The top tier was carved into a "Pacman" shape to resemble a painter's palette that featured vibrant colors and a paint brush.

I wanted it to look like the brush was used to "paint" his name on the side of the cake :)

on the other side of the cake was a camera sitting on a Jamaican flag.

*** side note ***
my hubby saw this "camera" sitting on my kitchen table and thought it was real.
I was so happy to hear that I had "tricked him" b/c he's my biggest critic (LOL).

And the final touch was a soccer ball and net.

I was really happy with the way the cake turned out... It was MUCH better than I had in visioned.
I hope the birthday boy liked it :)
